Joining the fight against internet censorship
After the overwhelming uprising against SOPA/PIPA only a week or so ago on the 31st of January 2012 a judge in the Netherlands ruled in favour of Stichting Brein (the dutch MPAA) and ordered these ISP to start blocking 3 IP addresses belonging to the Pirate Bay. The ruling included a provision for Stichting Brein to expand on the list of IP addresses as they see fit, they do not first need to take action in court but have been pretty much given a carte blanche.
As I am someone who's income depends on copyright (I'm a software engineer) you might mistakenly think I applaud this ruling. However blocking these IP addresses has done little to prevent the Pirate bay from operating. It is as reachable as ever.
What it has done is given Stichting Brein the ability to block any IP address they deem leads to copyrighted material with no provision to appeal such a decision. This website, as many thousands on the internet, shares a server with other websites. If any such other website is targeted by Stichting Brein, they could deny access to my website and I would be powerless to do anything about it. They could deny access to your favourite website just as easily.
Worse yet, with no control or transparency over the IP addresses being blocked there is no guarantee those sites being blocked actually are breaking any laws.
Compare this to the police blocking access to your apartment block because they SUSPECT your neighbour has some stolen goods in their apartment but they haven't obtained a search warrant to investigate. Your neighbour simply moves town but your forever blocked to getting into your own house.
